With the favored Dan Evans nowhere to be found, the event could have lost some of its luster. But dark-horse candidate Pher Hale stepped to the plate to challenge the expected coronation of Kelvin "K-Cab" Cabrera and to add an extra dose of drama to the day.
Donning a brand new, tight-fitting Nike swim cap, the Rochester-born Pher dipped his head into the newly acquired five-gallon bucket (purchased specifically for the event) and set a new record by displacing 25 cups of water, one cup more than was displaced by John "Double Dozen" Annese at the 2003 Jam Master's JAM.
Pher's reign at the top was short lived. With chants of "Kelvin, Kelvin" echoing throughout the Gin Mill, K-Cab, who had been carbo-loading on Samuel Jackson, eh, Adams, throughout the first half, removed his trademark size-8-plus Dolphins cap and plunged his renowned noggin into the bucket.
The result was a near tidal wave, as water cascaded into the spill-over container, poured onto Kelvin's shirt and splashed onto the bench on which the bucket was placed and onto the floor. Upon looking into the bucket after Kelvin removed his head, event organizer Mike Campoli said, "It might be easier to just measure how much is left in the bucket."
The final tally registered a staggering 30 1/2 cups, obliterating the record, but there's no telling how many additional cups could not be counted.
The performance sparked a wild celebration, with K-Cab flashing numerous gang-related and WWF gestures to the crowd before ripping the swim cap off and hoisting his fist in victory.
