September 1, 2000 - New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Rangers goaltender Mike Richter may miss his club's season-opener because of a knee injury he suffered during the All-Star break last year. The Bergen Record in New Jersey reported on Friday that Rangers head coach Ron Low doesn't expect Richter to be ready for the October 7 opener, and he may not get his first action until later that month. The 33-year-old Richter had his season cut short last year because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The injury required season-ending surgery in April. Low told the newspaper that he doesn't see him being ready for the first game. The first-year coach thinks that the goaltender won't be able to play enough in the pre-season, so his conditioning will play a sufficient role. "I think the guy is going to have to play in a lot of scrimmages and stuff like that before you can walk onto the ice the first day and say, 'I can play in the No. 1 game'" said Low. "I think you're likely looking at him later in [October]." Richter suffered the injury during the All-Star skill competition. He attempted to play through the pain in the second half of the campaign, sitting out games when his knee would swell up. "It's something that the doctors are going to have to have a big part in," Low said. "We'll likely talk to them in training camp when we do the physicals to see how far he has come along." When it was apparent that the Rangers were out of the playoff race, Richter and the team felt it was best for him to undergo surgery so that he would be ready for this season. Kirk McLean, who stepped in for Richter last year, will be expected to take the crease in the absence of the veteran this year. The Rangers start training camp on Saturday, September 9 in Burlington, Vermont.

July 5, 2000 - NEW YORK (AP) -- Glen Sather is still talking and coaching candidates and free agents are still listening. Sather, the New York Rangers general manager said Wednesday he spoke with Mike Keenan last week and expects to discuss the Rangers' coaching vacancy with him later in the week. Sather also said former Buffalo Sabres coach Ted Nolan has expressed interest, "but I haven't talked to him yet." Sather said he's also spoken with Tom Renney, the Canadian Hockey Association executive and former Vancouver Canucks coach, about the vacancy. All of which means that former Edmonton Oilers coach Ron Low, reportedly set to rejoin Sather and replace the fired John Muckler, may not be such a sure thing. "There's nobody under contract and I'm still talking to people," Sather said during a conference call. He added that he might have his new coach by early next week. On the free agent front, Sather said he's looking at several big-name players, including former Oiler and Ranger Mark Messier and forward Claude Lemieux and defenceman Vladimir Malakhov of the Stanley Cup-champion New Jersey Devils. "At this time, I have a strong interest in him (Lemieux) as well as a strong interest in Malakhov," Sather said. "I've always had a strong interest in Messier. "We have an opportunity to sign all of them, but I don't know if we can. It'll depend on the money." Keenan coached the Rangers to the Stanley Cup in 1994, and his top player on that team was Messier. Asked what the Rangers need to get back into the playoffs after missing them for three straight seasons, Sather said "a lot more grit on the team and people that can move the puck better."

The move would reunite Low, coach of the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League last season, with Glen Sather, named general manager of the Rangers earlier this month. Sather was also the general manager in Edmonton when Low led the Oilers to a 139-162-40 record, including first-round playoff upsets against Dallas and Colorado in 1997 and 1998, respectively. June 1, 2000 - New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Rangers held a Thursday morning news conference to introduce Glen Sather as their new president and general manager. Sather recently stepped down as the GM of the Edmonton Oilers, who captured five Stanley Cups when Sather worked with the club as GM and head coach. The Rangers needed to fill a void created when they fired GM Neil Smith, who was joined in the unemployment line by head coach John Muckler. Muckler, a former assistant coach and head man in Edmonton, worked under Sather as head coach when Edmonton secured its fifth Cup in 1990. Sather announced his resignation from the Oilers on May 18 after 25 years with the organization. In 1978-79, Sather laid the groundwork for Edmonton's success by purchasing Wayne Gretzky's contract from the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Following the Oilers' inaugural NHL season, Sather was named general manager. In 1980, he drafted Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri and Andy Moog. After capturing the Stanley Cup following the 1983-84 season, the Oilers went on to win four championships in the next six years. Even after dealing Gretzky to Los Angeles before the 1988-89 season, Sather's Oilers won their fifth Cup in 1990 and reached the conference finals in 1991 and 1992. Sather was forced to systematically trade away the nucleus of those championship teams due to budget constraints and Edmonton missed the playoffs four consecutive years from 1993-97. Despite the budget problems, Sather was able to reinvigorate the franchise with shrewd drafting and trades, and the Oilers reached the playoffs each of the last three seasons. Sather recently completed his 21st season as the Oilers' GM and 24th as a member of the organization. He was the second-longest serving general manager in the NHL, behind only Boston's Harry Sinden, who has served as the general manager of the Bruins for 28 seasons.
