Welcome to Adult ("Day Care") Running Camp 1998!  Located in the foothills of the AdirondacksBrantingham Lake provides the setting for an unforgettable weekend.  If you are looking to get in shape for the fall cross-country season, get some strength training  on the hills and trails,  improve your race times and train like the Kenyans ( for 12 hours at about two-thirds the miles), this is the place for you.

WARNING:      If you do not enjoy stretching out  on  flat rocks under the summer sun and cooling your feet in the cold, clear water of a mountain stream, DO NOT COME.

WARNING:      If you would not wish to celebrate your triumph at surviving "Kenya Day", including making it to the top of  "Smitty", DO NOT COME.

WARNING:      If you do not like blueberry pancakes, fresh brewed coffee, trail mix, grilled yellow-fin tuna, eggs benedict and other such fare,  DO NOT COME.

WARNING:      If you do not want to have any fun, STAY HOME.

     SATURDAY IS KENYA DAY!
Saturday  a.m.  (time keeps getting later each year for some reason)  7:00 a.m.  : Easy run of 30 minutes,  followed by breakfast at the local diner, it’s the best.  Great coffee and blueberry pancakes.

Mid-morning rest:  usually someone tries to shower, which is absolutely NOT allowed before the completion of the three runs on Kenya Day.   At this time some of us try to exercise our minds by playing mind(less) games like Scrabble.   This year will witness the first Trivial Pursuit tournament, to be continued  later Saturday night and yes, finished, before dawn Sunday morning!

11:00 a.m.  TO THE DUNES!   Second workout of the day consists of hill repeats on "the dunes".  The workout culminates with a "race" up  "Smitty" in pairs.   This  "race" simulates an  "out of body" experience, when you will realize your body has deserted you about half-way up the slope.  When you arrive at the top, you will also realize that you are out of your mind.

LUNCH!   Down off the dunes we roll,  to the stream, the rocks and the sun.   Stretch out, relax, cool those tired feet.  Chow down on fresh fruit, salad, bread and sandwiches, accompanied by lots of water and gatorade.   Some of us nap, some play games, some go tubing down the stream, some actually talk about running, but ALL of us enjoy this  part of the day, which  lasts until about 3:00 p.m., when the final run ( 5-8 miles, fartlek) takes us along the wooded trails back to our point of origin, yes, THE PINE TREE.    Optional lecture:  1 p.m.:  How to train for a  _______. You fill in the blank, Jerry Smith fills in the rest. Note: two hour maximum.

Gin and tonics, or whatever your beverage of choice happens to be-this is time to celebrate! (No, you can’t shower yet--dinner reservations aren’t till 7p.m.) After a cocktail,  everyone hits the showers and gets ready for a sumptuous dinner at another local restaurant and a second  "night on the town."  Live entertainment abounds (Art!) and the trivial pursuit teams start talking trash.

 SUNDAY:
a.m.  :  All runners are treated to the Sunday morning luxury of  sleeping in until  8:30 when  we head for the horse trails about five miles north of Brantingham for many of the runners’ last run.  This usually lasts about 40 minutes( straight running), at which time everyone starts "talking"  (there is absolutely  NO whining allowed at adult running camp) about brunch, so we head back to the Brantingham Inn for our last meal of the weekend.  Eggs benedict is but one of the menu choices.   Brief  awards ceremony.

Noon:  Say farewell, and get home so you can recover for work the next morning.   Camp is not officially over, however, until after the first run of the Adirondack Trails cross country camp at about 3:00 p.m. and all are invited to stay and run with the high school participants who arrive at Brantingham for, not a mere weekend, but an entire week of  cross-country training and fun!
