San Diego House of Submission: Statement of Beliefs:
We believe that All styles of martial arts have their individual or collective benefits. However, we also believe that all styles have their individual weaknesses. Dealing with these weaknesses increases reality in street combat. As an example; I have a black belt in Moo Duk Kwan (Tae Kwon Do) Karate, which practices kicks (Tae), hand strikes (Kwon) as an art form (Do). Thus, Tae Kwon Do is; the Art of kicking and punching (or striking).
The kicking and striking (hands) are realistic (=benefit) while the forms- though traditional are not realistic in street situations (=weakness). I’m not saying there is not a reason to practice the (forms) but only that cross-training and sparring other styles is more important (and should carry more weight) when promoting (belts) to individuals. Cross-training helps a person to truly know his potential in the art he has chosen.
Historically, traditional Martial Arts have not seen the likes of reality (no rules) fighting. This is why they have not faired very well in such events as the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships) and similar tournaments. One could argue that there are too many rules in the (UFC) or that the mat is made for grapplers to look good, or any other point they wish. But, the truth is 95% of ALL REAL FIGHTS go to the ground no matter where they are located. Grapplers (jiu jitsu, wrestlers, shoot fighters and sambo students) deal with this reality.
The world has become more sophisticated than when these traditional stand-up Martial Arts first started. Freestyle karate must adapt to the reality of grappling, take-downs and submission fighting. Points don’t win in the street, your opponent must quit fighting (submit). We all can learn from what the Gracies (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and the World Class Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestlers have brought to the table of reality fighting. We ALL must learn to use what works (benefits) and discard what doesn’t (weaknesses).
THE CHOICE:
So what do you (or I) do with this information? Well, we could say it’s not true and go back to our dojo and work-out with others who are putting full faith in their (single) system, or we could accept the truth of the statement and begin cross-training to increase our skills in reality street fighting. The Choice is yours.
