MEDFORD MASTERS WILL BEGIN OCTOBER 13, 1999

Medford Masters is a small, unassuming crew. There's usually only a handful of us at the 25-yard pool at Medford High School. This tends to make the workout choices a little more democratic than what you might find at any other Masters club.

Coach Rich Cheney will gently get you up to speed in the latest techniques and training sessions. Exercise in clean, comfortable water that is rated as the safest way to cardio-vascular fitness without the jarring and jolting of other exercises. You'll see that the swimmers are a social bunch with varying ability and swimwear that doesn't leave much to the imagination.

WORKOUTS

Coached workouts are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:15 or 8:30. At the beginning of the season, our workouts range from 2100 to 2500 yards. We eventually work our way up to 3000 yards in under an hour and a half. We're currently at about 3000 yards per workout. The swim lanes are divided into fast and not-so-fast lanes so you can swim accordingly.

On Saturdays, Masters members may swim from 12:00 to 1:30 for an uncoached workout.

Showers, lockers (not overnight) and peripheral swimming gear (fins, paddles, kickboards, etc.) are available.

DIRECTIONS

Medford High School - 489 Winthrop Street in Medford
(781) 393-2345

FROM ROUTE 128

Route 128 South to Route 38 South. Follow 38 South through Woburn into Winchester.

Go left at a Super Stop and Shop, under a railroad bridge and up a small hill; you will come to a small rotary. Follow signs for 38S through the rotary; 38S will also be called Main Street at this point.

Follow Main Street; it will become Winthrop Street as you enter Medford (see town sign on right). The driveway to Medford High School is about .7 mile from the Medford town sign on the left side of the road.

If you come to a Temple on the left, you have gone too far. Turn around. When you see the temple again on your right, slow down because you'll be making the next right possible after the temple into the Medford HS entrance.

The pool is located at the opposite part of the building from where you're first approaching it.

FROM ROUTE 93 NORTH OR SOUTH

Take Exit 32, Medford Square

If you're coming from 93 NORTH, as soon as you come to the rotary off the exit ramp, you'll bare right approaching Medford Square.

If you're coming from 93 SOUTH, you'll go three-quarters of the way through the rotary following 60 West approaching Medford Square.

As you approach Medford Square, you'll come to a light. Go straight. Try to get in the right-hand or center lane.

At the next light, you'll be in the heart of Medford Square. Go straight again (going straight here involves veering slightly to the right). Go straight through the next light, you should see a church on your left.

Next you'll come to a hellacious rotary. Your course through this rotary is to take the exit not even 180 degrees from where you enter- it's like you'll stay to the right when you enter and bear right.

This will be Winthrop Street. You'll be able to see a traffice light about 200-300 yards away.

Go straight through this light. Start looking on the right side of the road. In about 1/8 to 1/4 mile you'll see a temple on your right. Slow down because you'll be making the next right possible after the temple into the Medford HS entrance.

The pool is located at the opposite part of the building from where you're first approaching it.
