What to do in Rotorua
So, you're visiting Rotorua, and want to
know what there is to do and see. Here's a few pointers, as recommended by the
people who live here and spend lots of time showing visiting orienteers our
city:
-
First get a map. The best maps
of Rotorua are available from Tourism Rotorua on Fenton Street.
Running. The best place to go
running is the Whakarewarewa forest, a couple of kilometres from the city
centre. Go to the Visitor Information Centre at the forest (its on Long Mile
Drive), and have a look at the maps they have there.
A popular track is the Pohutaroa Track. This has a superb view of the city from the top of Pohutaroa Hill. Total time to run from the Information Centre to the lookout and back is around 30-40 minutes.
Mountain Biking. Once again the
Whaka Forest is the best for this. The information centre on Long Mile Drive
has maps available. Try biking straight up Nursery Rd (just along
from the information centre), then straight in front of you is the first
mountain bike trail.
Orienteering Running. Check out the Permanent Orienteering Course. Maps are available at the Visitor Information Centre on Long Mile Drive for the astounding price of $2.00 each.
Polynesian Pools. A pleasant
way to spend the evening. They have a collection of Spa baths, of differing
temperatures. One way to enhance your enjoyment is to alternate the hot pools
with cold showers (there is an outdoor cold shower).
Mexican Cantina. Recommended for a cheap and delicious feed. Its on Fenton St, and foreigners are allowed to write messages all over the walls.
