It's 2003 fishing is changing so much that you need to look at new ways of fishing for walleye in the river system.

In the past you would use the same jig or crankbait all day long and hope that you would catch fish. If the weather and water conditions, where correct you would catch walleye. You can change your success rate by changing the way you fish. Here are a few things to think about.

1.You need to locate your walleye, don't take it for granted just because you caught walleye in that location last week that they are still there this week. For example if the wind was blowing into the west shore of the river & now is blowing into the east side of the river your odds that they are on the east side of the river are much greater. Also the time of year would make a big difference on the depth that they would be at, because of the temperature of the water.

2. When you are using crankbaits keep in mind the temperature of the water, in cold water when the walleye are lying on the bottom you would troll much slower then if the water was warmer so you would be using a deep diving crankbait so it stays on the bottom. Also using a heavier line or lead core to help to keep it down. Don't be afraid to change colors if the color that you are using isn't producing. This was caught June 30th

One of the secrets for successful jig fishing is to select the right jig, the lightest one possible but where you can still feel the bottom. Current & depth are factors in selecting the proper weight of the jig, color & presentation are also very important, who knows what will motivate a fish to bite. I use brighter colors on sunny days or with reduced water clarity. Three things that I suggest are the following,

a. Always Keep a tight line

b. Keep the jig near the bottom

c. Set the hook Quickly

Three basic actions you can give a jig is (1.)let it drag the bottom (2.)hop it along the bottom (3.)have the jig just off the bottom. Try these methods at different times of day ( one action might not work in the morning but will work will that afternoon.

The same is true with crank baits or spinner blades.

The one thing a good fisherman must be willing to do is experiment and try all types of presentations no matter where he is fishing.

The one thing that will make you a better fisherman is to keep a notebook in your boat and keep good notes. You will need to note the colors used, the type of bait used, the speed of presentation, the weather and anything else you feel is important. This allows you to check back and see what worked best for you in the past, and will likely work will again.

All that's left is to get out on the water and catch some fish! We hope to see you on the water, good luck & good fishing! Back to Top
