Buckeyes Lose  Kickoff Classic 23-12

I for one watched this game not in disbelief, but with a sense of surprise.  There must have been about fifteen plays where I thought to myself, "this would have never happened last year".  The prime example was the 7 minute Miami ground march downfield in the fourth quarter.  Miami came right at OSU, running mainly up the middle, overpowering the Buckeye defensive line.  Well one thing is abundantly clear is this is not last year.  Although it may be too early too tell, this may be a rebuilding year for Ohio State.  With last year's NFL team gone, there may just be too many inexperienced players at skill positions to return to such a high level of prominence.  The Buckeyes seemed to be playing tentatively on both sides of the ball, especially following the end-around TD by the Miami quarterback Kelly.  It is easy to second guess Coach Cooper when he elected to replace Austin Moherman with Steve Bellisari just when Moherman started to appear comftortable with the reigns. However, that was only one of the factors that lead to the Buckeyes demise.  On paper the Buckeyes have unproven talent with great speed and strength, however they did not seem able to match the game presence and heart of departed standouts David Boston, Joe Germaine, and Jerry Rudzinski.  In hindshight, it may have been a good idea to schedule an Akron or Toledo the first game to help build the confidence of the young Buckeye team.  Let's hope they can recover in time for UCLA.
