Anglers wishing to target Lakers should definitely give Newfound Lake
a try! The current state record is from Newfound and it's no wonder
when you consider the environment is perfect. Newfound is an extremely
deep, clear lake which is perfect for growing big lakers. Newfound is one
of the special regulation waters with a 15" minimum size.
Lake trout require, cold, clear, well oxygenated water, so they are
found almost exclusively in oligotropic lakes. In summer they often move
to
depths of 50 to 100 feet, but in spring, fall, and wintrer you can
find them at depths of 20 feet or less. They prefer water from 40 to 52
degree F and feed
on smelt and alewives along with plankton.
In the winter jigging through the ice or using live bait like smelt
is very effective to catch Lakers. After ice-out, you can find Lakers
close to the surface and trolling with streamers or sppons can be very
effective. Once the water warms above the mid-50's, Lakers will move deep
to colder, more oxynegated water. At this time you can still catch
them but you need to fish DEEP. Trolling with downriggers will get
your lure/bait down to the required depth.
