smtfmt

The name stands for SMarT ForMaTting. I use it constantly, integrated in FTE, but it's easy to integrate into other text editors, too. It's a filter program and accepts parameters in the input text (in-band) in lines beginning with "@@ ". Look at the description for more details and download the gzipped awk script if you like it (watch out for the .gz extension, it may be discarded by the browser at downloading!).
