Facts
SALAMANDER is the common name for about 320 species of Amphibians
with tails.
They include all the members of the order Caudata, including the
newts (family Salamandridae).
Salamanders occur mainly in the temperate regions of the Northern
Hemisphere.
They do not occur in Australia or south of the Sahara in Africa
and are rare in South America.
The name Salamander comes from an old Arabish word
meaning "lives in fire", stemming from an
old belief, false of course, that the salamander could walk
through fire and remain unharmed,
One Salamander has thereby got his name, Fire salamander (Salamandra
salamandra).
Handling
When handling with salamanders or newts especially the little ones,
use extreme causion, they can very easy get hurt, and some species
is very slippy
and it´s easy to drop them on the floor, don´t take
them out from the terrarium to often, the
salamander can very easy be stressed or come in a trauma, so
let it be if it´s not necessary.
Feeding
When you are feeding your pets, don´t throw in lots food,
if they don´t eat everything up, then
the food can pollute the water, for an example can crickets go
to attack on your
favourite pet and thereby harm it. That´s not so fun, give
so much crickets that
you think they will eat and then if there are some crickets left,
remove them and
give them later. And don´t give food who is bigger than your
pets mouth.
Food that is great for amphibians are; mealworms, waxworms, super
waxworms,
fruit flies, house flies, earthworms, silkworms, isopods, tubifex
worms and
frozen mosquito worms and sometimes frozen meat.
Vitamins should also be used.
