Fishery Management
Our oceans contains incredible values from the potential catch of fish.
Michaael Harris points in his book
Lament for an Ocean on the fact that Nations like Canada and the European Union have mismanaged this renevable ressource for decades now, and still are racing to catch as many fish as possible before their neighbouring countries, instead of managing the oceans in the manner of the farmer, securing a long term sustainability.

This race for fish makes the fishermen invest to much money in fishing equipment, and to many people are fishing after the same fish. By limiting the capacity of vessels and fishermen, it is possible to catch larger amounts of fish over time with a smaller effort.
Eurostat points in one of its publications on the fact, that the European Unions catch of fish have decreased to only 2,5% in 1996 compared to the best year of 1968.

Lament for an Ocean by Michael Harris is giving a very objective view point on the failure of fishery management in Canada. Not saying that anyone person or organisation are to be blamed alone for the policy failure - but pointing to the fact that the historical institutions in the fishery, political vote buying and bureaucrats, that didnt wont to act on the findings of the marine biologist and in fact often supressed reports to do this.
A very well done research, that will submit positively to lay debate on the problems of over capitalisation and sustainable development in our oceans.
