My name is Jason A. Cartier and I am a Trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.  I am currently stationed back in my home town, Troop 4: York County.  I attended the Highway Patrol academy as part of Basic Class 78 which took place from March 10, 2002 through June 7, 2002.  The Highway Patrol academy is normally 20 weeks (unlike the 9 weeks for basic law enforcement officers); however, since I was already a certified law enforcement officer and this was a small class of certified officers only then we were only required to attend 13 weeks.  I have gone through a lot of changes since I last updated this page so let me tell you a little about me.  From 1999-2001 I was a Telecommunications Operator with the Highway Patrol for Troop 4, which covers Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster, Union and York Counties.  During that time period the Highway Patrol was experiencing a hiring freeze and rumors spread that the next class would be for certified officers only, so in 2001 I left the Highway Patrol to become a certified officer with the Fort Mill Police Department, which is located just south of Charlotte, NC on the state line.  I began the Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia on May 21, 2001 as part of Basic Law Class #415 which graduated on July 27, 2001 where I was one of only a few to graduate with honors as a Distinguished Graduate.  I worked with the Fort Mill PD for almost a year and took several specialized training classes including Radar Operator and DataMaster Operator certifications.  The Fort Mill Police Department is a superb agency filled with very dedicated police officers.  It is an agency that I will miss working for and representing.  But, I could not let my life long dream pass me by though so I resigned from the Fort Mill PD when I recieved the official offer of employment with the South Carolina Highway Patrol as a State Trooper on February 19, 2002. Before I was able to transfer back home my first duty assignment upon completing the Highway Patrol academy was Richland County which is located in Troop 1.  Richland County covers Columbia which is the Capital of South Carolina.  I was stationed in Richland County for only a brief time, from June 2002 - September 2002.

Throughout the state not only does the Highway Patrol dispatch for Troopers, they also dispatch for SHEP (State Highway Emergency Program) which helps assist disabled motorist in various parts of the state.  Finally, they also dispatch for the State Transport Police, which are Officers that specialize in the federal laws relating to commercial truck enforcement.

I really do not recommend trying to out run one of these motorcycles. . . or the Trooper on the motorcycle.  Very few Troopers are chosen, and then highly trained, to make up the Motor Division of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.  Training includes detailed instructions in precision and pursuit driving, and many other situations like severe weather.

Here is a South Carolina Highway Patrolman at the Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC.  This is a brief section of the rigorous driving course that all Highway Patrolman have to pass before graduating from the Academy.  Once a Trooper is chosen to be part of the Motor Unit, they are sent back to the Academy to learn techniques that will benefit them in Traffic Enforcement.

I knew at an early age (around 6) that I wanted to be involved in Law Enforcement, which comes across as strange since I am the first of such in my family.  My First start in Law Enforcement was at the age of 14 when I became a Fort Mill Police Cadet.  I quickly rose through the rank and after 4 long, hard years , I was promoted to the Advisor over-seeing the entire program until I was hired as a Certified Officer when I turned 21.  As a Cadet I learned first hand the differences between city, county and state Law Enforcement and was hooked on the SC Highway Patrol by age 15.  Cadets assist Officers with patrol duties and special functions, for example; parades and football games.  I enjoyed volunteering with the FMPD and supervising and assisting other cadets with training and guidance.  I would definately recommend to any young individual interested in Law Enforcement to join a Police Cadet or Police Explorer program in your area.  For more information please feel free to e-mail me.
