This police service, located in the province of Quebec, is responsible for policing the island of Montreal. With a population base of almost 2 million people, the 4,100 officers that make up this department are responsible for 29 different cities and towns within the island of Montreal. This department was founded in 1972, when all the police forces within the Montreal area amalgamated, creating the present service.

Interesting to note is that the department has participated in policing missions in Haiti and Rowanda with the possibility of upcoming missions to Bosnia and Guatemala.

There are now 49 neighbourhood police stations within the Montreal Urban Community territory which cover the community based policing needs of the city as well as specialized squads such as the canine unit, cavalry, helicopter patrol, tactical squad, water patrol, and many others.
