Senate Democrat
Majority Sets New Precedent:
Failure to Pass Budget Resolution
Daschle Fails At Most Basic
Measure of Governance
Washington, DC - The
Democrat-controlled Senate has failed to pass a budget resolution-something that
has never been done before. Since the 1974 Budget Act, the Senate has never
failed to pass a budget. While a Senate budget was approved at the committee
level last month, Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle allowed this week's budget
deadline to pass without scheduling a budget vote. A top aide for Senate
Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) says the Senate is even unlikely to bring up
a budget resolution.
"It's no wonder the Senate under Senator Daschle's
leadership has failed to pass a budget resolution. It's because they don't even
have a plan. Why don't they have a plan? Because they are vacuous of ideas. A
budget sets forth one's priorities and the Democrats in the Senate are groping
for ideas. They would prefer to spend the American taxpayer's money with abandon
- giving little, to no, thought about settting priorities or even contemplating
curbing government spending and returning that money to the people who earned
it," said Congressman Dave Weldon, M.D. (R-FL). "This is simply irresponsible
governance by Sen. Daschle."
Recent rumblings heard in the Senate have alluded to the
possibility that the Senate will probably go straight to the appropriations
bills, by-passing a budget resolution.

Washington, D.C. - Today on
Capitol Hill, Representative Dave Weldon, M.D., along
with a host of GOP leadership including House Speaker Denny Hastert, Majority
Leader Dick Armey, and Majority Whip Tom DeLay, held a new conference to bring
attention to the need for the permanent repeal of the estate tax.
At Congressman Weldon's invitation, Danny Sexton of
Kissimmee, Florida and owner of Kissimmee Florist, shared his "death tax"
experience. Mr. Sexton, who comes from a family of florists, inherited his
uncle's flower shop and was faced with paying almost $160,000 in estate taxes.
This forced him to have to liquidate all of the assets, lay off staff, cut
salaries, and take out a loan just to pay the tax. He also had to establish a
line of credit just to keep the operation running.
"Danny Sexton is the face of
the death tax. The death tax isn't a tax for the rich, it is a tax that hurts
family owned businesses - family owned business that are the back-bone of this
great nation," said Congressman Dave Weldon, M.D.
"The death tax didn't just hit Danny and Nancy, it hit their
employees and hourly workers too, and some of them lost their jobs. For the
sake of future generations, Congress must take responsibility, do the right
thing, and permanently repeal the estate tax."
Congress is scheduled to vote Thursday on H.R. 1836, which
would make permanent the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA)
of 2001. EGTRRA is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2010.
