Shoulder To Shoulder

During the past few weeks, I've spent much time warning of the problems
and dangers of building a coalition against terror that includes such
notoriously bad actors as Sudan, Iran and Syria.  These countries, along
with others that are officially listed as state sponsors of terrorism,
simply cannot be relied on to help us win this war.  These countries are
not our friends.  Today, there is news that Russia is asking North Korea
to join the effort against terrorism.  Yes, North Korea - yet another
state sponsor of terrorism.

The good news, that too often goes unnoticed, is that a real coalition
against terrorists does exist.  Countries like Canada, Germany, and
especially Great Britain, as well as many other NATO members and some
others, have answered America's call.  Many of these countries are
fighting their own war against terrorists on their own soil.  They are
mobilizing resources and placing their young men and women in harm's way,
should-to-shoulder with our own soldiers, sailors and Marines.

My friends, the real coalition is a traditional group of countries that
share common values of freedom and democracy.  They understand what is at
stake and do not need to be bribed to do the right thing.  This is the
coalition that the President needs to focus on.    As never before in
history, the combined power of this coalition exceeds anything ever
assembled.  With the help of our real friends we can take heart in knowing
that victory will be won.

Fighting Hard

Far too often, Senate Republicans have been steamrolled in recent years on
a variety of important issues.  But now, they are engaged in a pitch
battle and they need our help.  Liberal Senate Democrats, led by Patrick
Leahy of Vermont, are blocking almost all of President Bush's judicial
nominees.  In fact, their blockade is unprecedented - reaching new lows
for the number of judicial nominations confirmed in the first year of a
presidency.

For example, Ronald Reagan saw 91% of his judicial nominees confirmed in
his first year in office.  During his first year, George Bush, Sr. saw 62%
of his nominees confirmed and Bill Clinton got 57% of his nominees through
in 1993.  But so far this year, Senate Democrats have confirmed only 13%
of George W. Bush's judicial nominees and that includes two liberals
originally nominated by Bill Clinton and renominated by George W. Bush in
a compromise.

Now, Senate Republicans have thrown down the gauntlet - they are
filibustering all appropriations bills until the Democrats move the
President's judicial nominations forward.  So far, they have succeeded.
But they need reinforcements.

Please take a few minutes next week to call your senators.  (Most Capitol
Hill offices are closed today.)  If they are Republicans, urge them to
hold fast and keep fighting.  If they are Democrats, tell them to work
with President Bush and not against him.  You can find contact information
for your senators by going to CWF's web site at http://www.cwfpac.com and
clicking on our "Congressional Directory."  Enter your zip code and the
site will automatically find your senators.  If you don't have access to
the Internet, you can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
Please call.  Our friends in the Senate need to hear from us.
