What's Happening ...
Monsanto Chemical Company is currently in the process of selling the Bond Road Landfill. Dumping additional municipal and infectious waste on top of this cauldron of unstable chemicals is a travesty that RALLE has vowed to fight unceasingly. Leachate from the site has come down Fox Run Creek killing the plants and animals living on or in the stream. Even today, small particles of colored plastic line the stream, buried in the mud. Contaminated runoff water does not know the difference between state boundaries. During Monsanto's ownership, the following chemicals have been dumped in various quantities: ANTIMONY- extremely hazardous; CADMIUM- known carcinogen inhaling dust or fume, extremely hazardous; FORMALDEHYDE- alleged carcinogen; MERCURY- highly toxic; STYRENE- toxic, flammable in liquid state; ZINC- metal dust may be flammable; PHENOLIC SLUDGE-(containing Phenol) toxic; ABS CRUMB- flammable. This list is incomplete since many hazards are listed as "unknown". Chemical information from public documents at USEPA & Toxic Release Inventory reports issued by Monsanto Port Plastics as being placed in the Dump at Bond Road.
Some additional facts:
In 1994 Monsanto submitted a request to increase the size of the dump. This PTI remains unapproved and has been revised several times including shrinking the capacity by almost 50%. RALLE has been involved in this permitting procedure. Rumpke Waste Inc. attempted to buy the site from Monsanto in 1996 but was denied ownership by the OEPA. At this time Rumpke also became the operator of the facility for Monsanto.
Our current goal is to identify the unknown hazards and get the dump cleaned up to protect our community.
