The Good Samaritan

PURPOSE:

This project is a response to our aspiration to help fight illiteracy among the Haitian population by targeting children.  Nearly 80% of the Haitian population is illiterate, and no one agency or association can win this war alone.  Whereas education and health care seem to be luxuries in Haiti, the use of early childhood education in unity with basic health care are most importantly essential, specially in destitute communities.

Many researches have proven that early education has a great impact in a child's future ability to learn. It becomes more difficult for a child to learn when exposed to education at a much older age. It worsen even more, if the parents are unable to assist in the learning process of a child, due to their own lack of academic skill.

PROBLEMS AND NEEDS:

As a result of the Military coup that had overthrown former President Jean Bertrand Aristide's Government and the Embargo, the community targeted, Waney, is now facing severe difficulties which transformed it to a poor and needy community. Presently, many  families are unable to feed and educate their children. Waney, is located some 3 1/2 miles away from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. It's population is about 25,000 inhabitants. Its most urgent need are education, health care, and food supply.
