Chapter 4

Jen opened her front door to find Brian standing outside with a rose in his hand.

"Hi." He said quietly. "Look I'm sorry. I know I was being a jerk last night, especially on our anniversary and I promise I'll be nicer to Taylor from now on." He smiled. "Do you forgive me?"

Jen sighed and smiled. "Of course I do!" She took the rose he offered her. "Oh that's so sweet! Thank you!" She kissed him sweetly on the lips. "Come on let's go in the backyard." They walked around her house into her large backyard. Like the Hanson's she had a pretty big property with about 2 1/2 acres.

They sat down on her porch swing. Brian rang his hands through his chin-length blond hair. He put his arm around Jen and pulled her close. "I don't mean to be so mean to Taylor it's just that...well...I don't know....nevermind."

"What?" Jen asked. She gently kissed his cheeks.

"Well, I mean, I guess, it's like I just get worried about you and Taylor. I mean here he is, this big super-star hotshot, who all the girls all over the world are in love with and you...you are this beautiful girl and you're his best friend. It's just you two spend so much time together and I guess I just get worried that one day he'll start to see you as more than just friends, if he doesn't already, and that you'll like him too."

Jen abruptly stopped kissing him and sat up. Surprised, she asked, "Is that it? That's why you hate him so much?"

"Well yeah, I guess."

"Brian, I can't believe your worried about me liking him."

"Oh come on Jen! He's Taylor Hanson. Everyone likes him."

"Well not me. Brian listen to me. Me and Taylor are just friends. Okay? Nothing more!" She wrapped her arms around him. "You're the only guy I love."

He put his arms around her too and pulled her close. "I love you too, Jen."

"So do you think you could be friends with him now?"

"Yeah, I guess. Maybe later I'll invite him over to shoot some hoops or something. I guess I have been kinda mean."

"Kinda! Ya'll practically tore each other's heads off yesterday."

Brian grinned sheepishly. "Sorry about that."

"Okay well anyway. Let's not talk about Taylor anymore." Jen smiled mischievously. "In fact let's not talk at all." She grabbed his face and passionately pushed her lips on his. He was quickly to responded.

Taylor turned around and walked over to the window, holding the phone with his right hand. "Yeah Brian invited me over tomorrow to shoot some hoops. I'm kinda worried about what he might be up to." He opened up his window and looked out into the darkness. Jen's bedroom window was exactly across from the room he, Isaac, and Zac shared. She was sitting in her desk chair staring back at him as they talked.

"Nope. He's not up to anything. He wants to be friends with you now."

"Uh huh. Why now?"

"Well you see the only reason he hated you was because he thought that you had a thing for me and that I might start to like you back." She laughed. "I was like 'Yeah right, me and Taylor no way.'"

Taylor looked hurt. "Excuse me and why not? I'm frankly a little hurt. Why couldn't you like me?"

"Taylor, your my best friend, I just don't think of you that way. Sorry man." She laughed again. "Don't even try to pretend that you care."

"Well I do care. I'm hurt. Being turned down by Jen Foster is a big let down. It lowers my self-esteem."

Jen smiled and rolled her eyes. "Whatever. God, you're making it sound as if you are in love with me. Sorry to break your heart, Tay."

"Jen, I'm just playing with you. I don't care. Well anyway I got to go cuz dinner's ready."

"Okay call me tomorrow."

"Okay, later." Taylor hung up the phone and waved to Jen. She waved back as he left the room.
