American Studies Program
Washington, D.C. - Fall 2002

I am studying political science at Wheaton College, and had the opportunity to spend a semester interning and studying in Washington, D.C.! I lived in community with 40 other Christian college students, interned at Bread for the World (amazing experience!), took classes, and had a great time! I'd love to go back at some point.

All of us at our picnic on the mall! The national mall is my favorite place in Washington - just the endless grass, so many people, so many buildings, so much going on... a good place to rest and think.

Ben and Clint, our friends right across the hallway. Well, no, there wasn't really even a hallway. Our friends from two steps away from our door... though you'd more likely find them on our couch.

Jen and Susan laughing at who-knows-what. Jen and Susan were my roommates and I love them!

My buddy Becca! I love this picture. Becca never hesitated to share moments of hyperness with me, which means a LOT!

A more sane picture of Becca and I, this time at the final banquet.

We took a Saturday to explore Georgetown and this picture is of Marcie, Becca, me, and Philip by the Potomac.

Eastern Market was THE place to go! It was full of fresh meats and cheeses, vegetables, fruits, pastries, breads, anything and everything, and then on the weekends it expanded to include tons of vendors outside, mostly artisans selling jewelry, paintings, clothing, flowers, anything, everything! Eastern Market was very alive, and I really loved it. You just had to be careful cause you could spend a lot of money very quickly there.

This is a picture of the Solar Decathlon on the national mall. It's a contest sponsored by the Dept. of Energy where 10 big universities from across the nation compete to design and build and live in the best, most efficient solar-powered house. At the end, the public gets to come and visit all the houses, see who won, and get lots of ideas for energy conservation in their own homes. I had a great time here. But I do remember losing Becca! But it was okay, I went over to the Smithsonian for awhile.

Clint and Susan. This picture makes me smile. There was a lot of love between our apartments.

Ben and Marcie at Becca's "ghetto party" on the roof of our apt. building.

Enjoying ice cream, cake, and hot chocolate (the people from CA and AZ were pretty cold!! okay we all were) at the ghetto party.

Becca, the birthday girl. I think she's the only one of us who had a birthday during the semester, I could be wrong.

All 40-some of us went to this Morroccan restaurant, the name of which escapes me. But anyway, it was a pretty neat experience sitting on big, low couches in the dark and eating unknown dishes on a center table. I think we all had a pretty good time! At the end, with dessert, the waiters pour extremely hot (and very sweet) mint tea into lots of little cups from way above their heads. Impressive, eh?

Clint, Becca, and I in our little corner at the Morroccan restaurant, which, ten seconds later, I still can't think of the name.
