DNA Shoah Project

THe DNA Shoah Project is a non-profit, humanitarian effort at the University of Arizona that aims to reunite families disrupted by the Holocaust. We are building a database of genetic material from Shoah survivors and their immediate descendants in an attempt to match displaced relatives, provide wartime orphans and lost children with information about their biological families and eventually, when the database has reached sufficient size, assist in the identification of Holocaust-era victims whose remains continue to surface. The project contains an educational component as well, employing current science and technology to teach the Holocaust in our schools. There is no cost to participants.

The project’s cofounders include Syd Mandelbaum, a scientist with a background in genetics and the son of two Holocaust survivors, and Dr. Michael Hammer, a renowned research scientist at the University of Arizona who specializes in human population genetics.

The success of our work depends on the creation of as large a database as possible. We are actively seeking DNA samples from survivors and second- and third-generation family members and we are traveling extensively to promote the project. We hope to use this window of opportunity to gather as many DNA samples as we can from survivors and their descendants around the globe, thereby creating a genetic testimony and legacy for victims of the Holocaust.

DO YOU WANT TO JOIN OR FORM A GROUP?... Here's How!

• Review the list above and if one of the groups is of interest , contact them. If you know of any other groups, please tell us so that others can find them.
  
• If no group is geographically near you or is not to your specific interest, why not try to form a group yourself? Contact your local synagogue, or put an ad in a local paper, or a local Jewish paper, and you'd be surprised how many other children of survivors may be in your area. If not, try the bulletin boards on the internet, such as the ones listed above.

THINGS THAT A GROUP CAN DO...

• Start your own "Rap Group" by just getting together on a weekly basis, or there is good probably that one of your members may be a social worker, or a counselor of some type. In my first group there was a clinical psychologist and a social worker.
  
• Assist in making Family Albums or Researching Documentation about relatives. You can look at what we are trying to do in the Augsburger Website, so that each family can make a webpage to document their story or remember lost loved ones.
  
• Educate others. Members of the group can go and speak at various events such as Yom Hashoah or Kristallnacht to give first hand family testimony.
