torch                                 hello torch

You have reached the Home Page of Lady Elisabeth Erinn MacCabe. Lady Erinn and her fiance, Lord Nikolai, are members of a medieval re-creation group called the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA Our marriage is planned to be at 7pm EDT 30 May 1998 at St Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Columbus, Georgia. If you would like to attend and have not received an invitation, please email us. We live in the kingdom of Meridies, in the Shire of RiverMarch, also known as Columbus , Georgia. If you are looking for a contact person in RiverMarch, please email us (Nikolai has recently become senechal here.).

The SCA is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the study of pre-17th century European history. We research all aspects of the time period and put the research to practical use. We also give demonstrations of medieval arts and sciences free to local groups, such as schools, churches, and service organizaiions.

Nikolai's Favorite Mead

(yield: 1 gallon)

Ingredients

Before beginning any brewing project, sterilize everything. I do this by taking a gallon of water and adding a tablespoon of chlorine bleach. Then I wash everything (vat, spoon, airlock, etc) well and rinse WELL (I usually say rinse about 4 times and sniff...if you can't smell chlorine, rinse again and use it.... if you can smell chlorine, repeat the entire rinsing process.)

Take 2 pounds of wildflower honey (other honeys will alter the taste). Boil honey in enough water to make 1 gallon mixture. Scoop the "scum" from the top of the mixture as the impurities rise. When honey is fully integrated into the mixture and the impurities have been removed, take mixture off heat and let cool to approximately 95 F. When the mixture has cooled, add the juice of the lemon and stir with a sterile spoon.

Put mixture in sterile vat, adding yeast. Put zest and tea bag in cheese cloth bag. Tie well and, holding string, drop bag in vat. Making sure to keep one end of the string out of the vat (for easy removal of bag), cover vat securely and place airlock in lid (using manufacturer's instructions). Put the vat in a cool, dark place that is out of the way. I usually use a closet.

After the bubbling has died down (between a week and a month), GENTLY move the vat to a counter or table on which you can work. Take sterilized bottles (4 quart bottles, or 8 pint bottles, or 1 gallon bottle ... Glass or plastic work well). Sterilize and rinse well suction hose. Gently suction mead from top of vat, being careful not to disturb settlement (the burm) at the bottom of the vat. Leave about 1 to 2 inches of space at the top of the bottle, more if you are actually corking it. Seal bottle, using caps, corks, screw tops, etc.

Now comes the hard part. You wait. And wait. And wait. The mead needs to age a MINIMUM of 6 months. I recommend a year. The taste only improves with age. Remember, you should be able to read the newspaper through a gallon bottle of mead, so if it's cloudy, it is much too young. The taste of mead only improves with age, so let it age as long as you can. (I forgot about a bottle of mead I had stored under the sink... it is now 10 years old and exquisite in taste! Lady Erinn has a set of thimble sized glasses to be used with this mead.)

Home Page of Shire RiverMarch RiverMarch

knots

Shire RiverMarch has been in existance since 1987. It varies in size from about 10 members to 25 or more members at any given time due to military members being transferred in to or out of Fort Benning.

Aside from practicing medieval fighting styles, RiverMarchers participate in a variety of arts and sciences. We have several skilled armorers in residence, a calligrapher or two, quite a few costumers, brewers, dancers, workers in metal and wood, bookbinders, and even one who is learning to make jewelry. This is in no way a comprehensive list. (Our cooks alone would disembowel me if I implied they were not around.)

RiverMarch has, traditionally, hosted the Meridian Children's Festival, which has included the list to select the Children's Champion. It should be noted here that most of the former champions have gone on to become king of our fair Realm. When more information on the next Children's Festival becomes available, you will be able to find it here.

It is our sad duty to inform the Knowne World of the passing of Baroness Gloria Kirkhouse of Tain on 25 February 1998 following a brief bout with pancreatic cancer. Her last days were relatively pain free and, having said goodbye to many of her friends, passed easily in her sleep. We shall miss her and her wisdom.

Since the children are our future, Shire RiverMarch decided to host an event annually in their honor. The focus of this event is on the children, with games, stories, and other activities in which children can be involved. There is even a special feast prepared for them, separate from the feast for the adults.

But don't think we've forgotten the adults...among other things that adults may do are fighting in the Champion's list, participating in a wonderous feast, and partaking of the assorted delights of the revel in the evening.

During 1998, RiverMarch will not (most likely) be hosting a Children's Festival. However, expect its return in 1999. Rowan McDonald is tenatively the autocrat. One change being made to the Festival is its name. We are going to be calling it the Baroness Gloria's Memorial Children's Festival.
