This page will provide a general overview of the sun, moon, and planets in our solar system, touching upon their metaphysical symbolism and significance to us. Although these pages are graphics-heavy, they are intended to provide an interactive and entertaining medium for the exploration of our Solar System through art, music, and creativity in general. Your patience will be rewarded by a rich blend of multimedia magic designed to explore the mysteries of space, the magic of life, and the majesty of creation!
The SUN The EARTH and The MOON.
Questions and Answers
That is a very good question! Most people take it for granted that we are graced with two luminaries (light-providing celestial bodies) in the sky of our Earth, the SUN and the MOON. They appear to be about the same size to us from our vantage point on Earth, looking up at the heavens, but they have very different natures and influences upon us, and are vastly different in actual size! Yet each one is essential for life to exist on earth.
The Sun is the masculine, life-giving force that provides light for plants to make energy, while the Moon is the feminine, or receptive counterpart which causes the tides to ebb and flow, a necessary movement for any life to occur in the ocean, which is the primordial mother of all life on Earth....there is no life that did not begin in the sea! What else do you know that has a cycle with a periodicity of 28 days? Half of all people know quite well! This is no more an accident than the salinity content in our blood equal to that in the ocean. It's all connected.
Without the fluctuations of the sea, without the tidal gravitational force of the Moon, which seems to breathe in and out between New Moon to Full Moon to New Moon again, in a "moonth" of 28 days, we would not have our 13 regular lunar months, and life could not exist.
Both the Sun and the Moon exemplify our archetypal Father and Mother in the heavens, whom together permit the creations of Nature to exist on this planet. Only during a total solar eclipse do we see how identical in size they appear, yet appearances can be deceiving! Like Astronomy, many of the most crucial components rely upon things which we cannot see, like nutrinos or dark matter. Even black holes can only be discerned by the footprint they leave, as not even light can escape their powerful grip.
Many phenomena that we see from Earth are optical illusions, such as the retrograde motion of other planets, a phenomenon caused by the movement of Earth, as well as the observed planet, which only appears to move backward in the sky due to Earth's relative orbital motion. The planet is not actually moving backward from evening to evening, it only appears so because of our earth-based vantage point, relative to the sighted planet.
The more we look at countless examples like these, the more we realize that the universe is not as we perceive it to be, and we would be foolish indeed to take into account only those things which we can verify with our limited five senses, or those things which are provable scientifically. Metaphysics, unlike science, takes into account both the seen and the unseen forces operating in the universe. Even science must bow to these invisible forces and their unmistakable relevance, like the example of Astronomy mentioned above.
As we continue to explore the natures of the remaining planets, we will begin to see how they also symbolically represent parts of us, deriving from mythology and its general characteristics, which have evolved through our brief history on Earth. The Sun and Moon are central because they establish the original division into duality, separating the darkness of night from the light of day (quite literally!), the Creator from the creation, male from female, goodness from evil, order from chaos, and all of the "polarities" or "dualities" we see around us.
