Child Abuse.  It kills three children a day* yet it continues. Young children are at the most risk of death due to child abuse.  Between 1995 ands 1997, 78% of child deaths were less than five years of age at the time of their death, while 38% were under one year of age. As for cause of death, 44% of deaths resulted from neglect, 51% from physical abuse, and 5% from a combination of neglectful and physically abusive parenting. Approximately 41% of these deaths occurred to children known to child protective service agencies as current or prior clients.
What can you do?  Doctors, teachers and other professionals are required by law in all 50 states to report suspected child abuse or neglect to local child protective agencies. "Reasonable suspicion" is all any citizen needs to contact authorities and file a report.  Anonymous reports can be made in all 50 states but are discouraged because they impede an agency's ability to gather information or call on the reporter as a witness if the case goes to trial.  All states have laws protecting the reporters of suspected abuse or neglect from legal liability as long as the report is made in good faith.  Very few reports are deliberately false.  Knowing how, when and what to report about child abuse and neglect can make a life or death difference for a Child.
