Welcome to Area 51 Secret Test Lab # 14. Me, Bruce, Garry, and Parker are all secret test riders. We will share our reports with you in this web page.
Test Object 1: Gary Fisher Pure Bender Freestyle Bicycle. This is Parkers ride. He just got into biking and doesn't really know much, but in about 2 weeks, he can do tailwhips and feeble grinds. One day he will probably be a good rider. The GF is an alright bike for beginner riders. Its a 4130 frame and fork(I think the fork is 4130). It has some somewhat decent parts on it. Decent 48's, Hoffman Patriot style bars, 990's in the rear, Nippons in the front, and V-monster-like tires. So far Parker has managed to break the cheap sproket , but thats becasue it was cheap. The one piece crank holds up rather nicely to Parkers 160lbs ass. The platform pedals also hold up nicely, they are Welgos. For a full out freestyle bike, it seems pretty light, around 28-30 lbs. Parker has told me that he is satified with the bike, especially since it was under $325(he thinks that was about the price).
1 is the lowest 5 is the higest
Street: 3.5
Flat: 3.5
Ramp: Parker is to scared to ride ramps, but judging from how the bike holds up in other areas, I would give it a 3.
Hits: 4130 Frame, Gyro 2, 990's
Misses: Doesn't come with pegs, hard seat, WEAK sproket.
Test Object 2: Hoffman Bikes Low-Drag Handlebars. The handlebars of choice for yours truly. After bending some crappy Al bars and some GT bars, I got the Low-Drags. The main reason I got them(not really) is because of what Larry at "Larry's Bikes" in Penn told me: "You see these new Low-Drag's have the caps on the end of the bars::pointing to the clamp bar::, the old ones don't, see::Pointing to a Flash with old Low-Drag's" Larry is a little weird some times. Any ways, these bars haven't slipped/crushed/bent on me and I have had them for 2 months or so. They are pretty nice if you like lower narrower bars. They also come in a plastic bag big enough to suffocate a small child in:)
Test Object 3: Mongoose DMC Hubset. Definately one of the cooler hubsets. The rear axle is a big burly half inch one, so its really strong. You might have a problem finding GOOD pegs that fit, but if you are pacient you will find some. The hubs are pretty smooth considering they are about $70 from most mail order places. The front hub is made to be use with a fork that has peg bosses because the front axle is really short. Other than that these are some decent hubs.
