Well, seeing as how I so rarely go to the movies, I've recently started getting some of these recommended horror flicks on video and let me tell you... I'm having fun. Half the fun, of course, if finding the bloody things . Oh... this is going to be one big ramble 'cause I haven't posted in so long I've forgotten the secret code to creating a paragraph break. Anyway, so far I've watched (and loved) Demons and Suspiria. I've got, but haven't watched yet, Gates of Hell and The House by the Cemetery. I want to rent, but can't find yet, The Beyond and Black Christmas. Others on my list of films to see include Dead Alive and Reanimator. Laura

R.W.,

Regarding Dustin Hoffman: His second film (I believe), Midnight Cowboy, was the only X-rated flick ever to win the academy award for best picture, and it certainly wasn't "mainstream." I'm unclear, however, as to what you mean by "mainstream." Care to enlighten?

Oct 19, 1998

Hi all. Saw an interesting horror movie a couple of weeks ago called NECRONOMICONwith David Warner starring as H.P.Lovercraft who goes in search of the ancient book known as the 'Necronomicon'. The special effects and monsters used in the three stories were outstanding and the wraparound tale featuring Lovecraft was quite creepy. I assume that the three stories are Lovecraft tales? Anyone else seen this little gem?

Also saw THE PROPHECY a couple of weeks ago (the Christopher Walken one not the Seltzer one). I'd heard a lot of good things about this movie so probably expected too much. I thought it was okay. Must look out for PROPHECY 2 as according to the John Shirley board it surpasses the original.

BLACK CHRISTMAS sounds great, but I bet I've got little hope of finding it here in the UK. Any UK horror film buffs know if BLACK CHRISTMAS is/was available here?

Andy,

Don't waste your time with Prophecy 2. It was shit.

Anyone out there see BRIDE OF CHUCKY? Man! What a great movie! I enjoyed this horror fest more than i have enjoyed any horror movie in A LONG LONG LONG time. I know it sounds stupid...BRIDE OF CHUCKY?????? I mean get serious, right??? WRONG! This was a fantastic movie. It had style (thanks to director Ronny Yu), humor and gore gore gore!!! The surprise ending alone is worth the price of admission. Check it out.

Hola amigos,
I just watched 3 "horror" moves over the last coupla days. Here's what I thought:
SPECIES II -- I liked it quite a bit better than I did the first one. The effects were pretty damn gruesome, and although the characters were ALL flat and stereotyped, I got a kick out of it's simplicity. The final alien transformation was totally killer too. Definitely worth $3.00 rental. *****Special Bonus****** Natasha Henstridge buck naked. That's all I'm saying.

The X-Files -- I don't watch the series. But I managed to catch the last episode of last year and enjoyed it so I rented the movie. I was very pleasantly surprised. The dialogue in both the film and the series is so damn forced that it's downright annoying, but in the movie, it wasn't as evident. I dug the movie, and there's no denying the chemistry between those two. Cool flick, worth the rental.

Gargantua -- One of, if not THE worst horror movies I've ever seen. A movie gone so horribly astray that it becomes comical. And for that reason alone, all of you should be forced to sit through it. Oh, but this movie is bad. In every aspect. You should pay the video store people to hide this one.

That's all I got. Hasta.
Matt

Watched DEEP RISING last night and enjoyed it. The FX were pretty cool and the acting wasn't too bad. Unlike most horror movies of the B quality attempting A status they didn't move things along too quickly. This movie did well in holding the viewer in suspence, not showing us the sea monster till almost an hour into the movie. Worth renting!

Hey Matt. I agree with you on Gargantuan. I watched when it aired on tv. Just be happy you didn't have to sit through commercials!! Oh wait, maybe that was a blessing!!! Ya it was really bad. Did you happen to catch Creature (the tv movie based on Benchley's novel White Shark)? Man! it was pretty awful as well.

Saw JOHN CARPENTERS VAMPIRE$ the other night. I was really really disappointed with it. It could have been such a great movie but it just flopped. I found myself saying what so many horror fans are always saying (though i never said it myself untill now), "I dont want to see another vampire movie for a long long time." This movie LOOKED amazing. I loved how it was filmed but i just thought that when there was no action it just totally died. Long pointless shots of James Woods or the awful Daniel Baldwin looking off in the distance at something. I almost fell asleep. The vampires were so so. Same ol' shit. After seeing it i just dont know why Carpenter felt this movie needed to be made. Oh well. I'll still be first in line when Carpenter's next movie comes out.

Damn it. I had really high hopes for Vampire$ too. Guess I better give it a chance before I give up on it though. I'm going to Anchorage this week to see Apt Pupil, Vampires, and Soldier. I'll let y'all know what I think.
Reanimated: I agree 100% on Deep Rising! What a fun monster movie eh? They didn't try to get all "brainy" and explain what or why, they just stuck a bunch of (pretty cool) characters in a funky situation. I loved it! Just a fun movie to watch.
No, I haven't seen CREATURE, but I thought the TV folks did an okay job with Beast....As well as you can do with a big ol' squid anyway. Later!

Saw the sequel to I KNOW... Jennifer: NICE FUCKING TITS!!! That's all i can recommend from it. a LOT of holes in plots between the two. what did I expect, huh? Paul

Nov 23, 1998

I finally watched a new-ish horror movie at the weekend. Thought I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER was terrific. The plot was a bit shaky especially in the second half but it had lots of jumpy moments and the characters were almost interesting. Great fun.
Anyone from the U.S. seen the sequel yet? We'll have to wait eons until it arrives in the UK I am sure. - Andy F.

Nov 25, 1998

Andy

I saw I STILL KNOW... a couple of weeks ago. What you said about the first one goes for the second. Lot's of great scares as julie james and the fisherman play cat and mouse. This movie, unlike most sequels, did a good job of building up the story line. It wasn't untill the second half that people started dying left right and center. Oh ya, and you'll probably miss alot of key lines because of all the guys in the audience hooting and haulering everytime Jeniffer Love Hewitt displays her big boobs. I guess i cant blame them ; )

Reanimated....

p.s...it sucks you have to wait so long for movies to be released there that are realeased here eons earlier. But i would trade I Still Know for Dean Koontz's Seize the Night any day!!! (it wont be out here till the new year)

Have any of you rented Phantasm 4: Oblivion yet? I was really suprised at how good it was. The extra footage from the origonal was great! Curious as to what others think. Also, if you are a Phantasm fan, check out The Sentinel Magazine, offical zine devoted to the series. Very cool website, interviews with Reggie, Don Coscarelli, fiction, artwork, etc. The web address is: http://www.garrisonent.com/sentinel/faq.shtml It's worth a look. Also if you are a budding artist they are in big need of artwork! Brian Keene

Dec 4, 1998

Reanimated,

Seems like you've fallen back to your previous viciousness and insulting manner, simply because people don't see eye to eye with you. And you were doing so good there for a while too. But all good things must end. I decided I'd post here rather than fouling up Richard Laymon's board with all your YAAAAAAAA!!!!FUUUUCKKKKKKITTTTTT!!!!!!!! kind of posts.

Because certain fans of horror don't enjoy remakes...by the way, the Birds on HBO was a sequel, not a remake, although it was fuckin ghastly...doesn't mean you need bash them all. There is a very good reason why most of us aren't interested in the new PSYCHO. Because the original is a classic. That's not to say the new version won't be appealing as well in some form or fashion, but there's no reason for it, especially a god damn SHOT BY SHOT recreation. Now aren't they being just SO fuckin original? WHAT IDIOTS!! At least the updated REAR WINDOW, and it also got lots of bad reviews, brought an update and recreation of the classic tale by Cornell Woolrich. See, TRUE fans do little things like read the novels and stories involved. I guess a SUPPOSED fan like yourself is happier to be a dork who tosses jujubies at old people in other rows and scream YAAAAAA! KIIILL THE BIIITCH NORMAN!

A work of art doesn't need to be remade, although I'm sure you'd like to see all classics redone just so you can see them in color and hear all the new cuss words they add, and maybe get to see red blood this time instead of just that syrup. Too subtle for your mentality. Plenty of people have "engaged in conversation" about this topic, but you just don't like what you hear. That's when you throw your usual tantrum. So get up off the floor, wipe your teary eyes, and just get used to the fact that Hollywood is going to continue having trouble doing new and invigorating and interesting material while you pander to their tactics and fall for their stupid scams.

As far as that "bringing a whole new generation" to the film, it's just a matter of bilking a whole new generation out of their cash. I bet you can't wait to see them remake PSYCHO II and III too. And watch them do it shot by shot. That will just be SO FUN!!!!! Oh yeah, you'll be first on line for them too, right? BullSHIT. Then you'll be crying that there's no reason for a remake, you silly snotnosed bastard.

I repeat! Cover tunes man! Cover tunes!!!! Hahahahah.
Isn't mimicry the sincerest form a flattery? C'mon guys, seriously now....Are we saying that because Lawrence Oliver set the standard for Henry V that Branagh's version never should have been made? The role of Norman Bates is classic, and there will always be actors craving to play that role. Any actor with balls would want to play Bates, and how could you blame them? He's our Hamlet guys, he's our Othello and our Lear....I understand that many of you hold this film near and dear to your hearts, and rightfully so....But Jeez, what a great opportunity as an actor, and what an opportunity as an audience.
Give 'em a break,
Matt

Dec 5, 1998

Thankyou Matt (even though i know you didn't mean that post necessarily in defence to my point)

John Pelan (it is you isn't it? if i'm wrong i appoligize) I think you misunderstand where i'm coming from. It's too bad because where you think i'm coming from makes me look like a cocksucker. Listen, this was a movie done by HOLLYWOOD. By Gus Van Sant. Do you really think that if he couldn't remake Psycho he would have done a different horror movie? Do you think he would have picked up an original script and gone "hey guys, lets not do psycho lets do this!" NO. Do i agree with that? I wish they would do originals JUST LIKE YOU!!! But the fact is Gus Van Sant wasn't GOING TO!!!!!

And just as an aside...FUCK YOU for saying i would talk to the goddamn screen yelling KILL KILL NORMAN KILL HER!!! Fuck you. I AM ONE RESPECTFUL MOTHERFUCKER AT THE MOVIES. SO KISS MY BLACK ASS. Thanks..i think that was the one part that actually irked me in your post LOL!

Hey, i didn't slam them for remaking Rear Window or the Birds I JUST DIDN'T LIKE THEM. BUT, John, I AT LEAST WATCHED THEM!!

And another point John. I assume your post is in defence of Geoff. I didn't slag on Geoff's intelligence. I questioned his and others devotion to the horror genre. I'm quite sure he is a huge fan. But i just WONDERED in that way WE ALL DO how he could be if you dont want to see Psycho. OK? Didn't see me cutting up his brain power or mentality though did you? Or callin him snot nosed, did you? Hey, do you see me callin you names? If you wanted to come and have a good talk i would have. If you had said HEY REAN i got a big bone ta pick wit ya naw get yor flamin canuk butt over here...ida been more than happy. What do you do John? Throw shit in my face and tell me to eat it. Thanks, my respect for you just went through the roof.

Anyway, point is it's Psycho and come on...you gotta be nuts not to wanna see it! Even after all your points isn't there just a tiny part of you that wants to see it?

Oh, and i did. It was ok. There was some miscasting i felt but i enjoyed Vince Vaughn as Norman especially and Clancy Brown as the cop. Brown though, is awsome in most things he does. I enjoyed the murder scenes. I think the hardest part coming out of the film was trying NOT to compare it to the original. If you compare it you dont like it. If you DONT compare if you love it!.......Reanimated

Dec 5, 1998

One other thing, John. Did you see Bride of Chucky? What did you think?

Dec 5, 1998

Reanimated:

No, I'm not the Wiper... When I use the nom de plume of "The Piper", I never vary it in any way... (I usually use it only to refute ridiculous statements from folks such as Dillon). My take on the new PSYCHO may surprise some folks that know what a traditionalist I am... I think it is quite probably a GOOD thing. (1).I think that it will probably cause quite a few people who may not have seen the original to check it out. (2). It may get some folks to read Robert Bloch. (3). It brings a very positive sort of attentionn in the mainstream to the horror genre, I'd much rather have folks thinking "PSYCHO" when they say "horror" than thinking of a piece of crap like SCREAM2 or IKWYDLS. However, there are things that you can do in a B&W film in terms of light and shadow that cannot be duplicated in a color movie. I think the new version was done for all the wrong reasons, (ego, arrogance, etc.); but I think the outcome can be quite positive...

John Pelan AKA The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (accept no substitutes!)

BTW: No, haven't seen BRIDE OF CHUCKY, I'll probably wait for the video...

Dec 5, 1998

Hi Everyone...Being a radio morning man has its advantages...Our station sponsoredd the opening night of PSYCHO and I thought I'd share my thoughts since I got to see it...As someone who saw the original, I could take it or leave it...Vince was excellant as Norman and the shower scene is a bit gorier, but other than that it didn't do much for me...It's a well made film, but not a film that NEEDED to be made...As the audience was leaving, I turned on the microphone and started working the crowd...I went up to a group of kids, probably around age 16, and I asked them what THEY thought...one replied: "It was the shit, yo! I'm going to Borders and getting the book!"...Perhaps the new generation will discover Bloch...Brian Keene

Dec 5, 1998

P.S.: Bride of Chucky was great!...It was very much an Eighties horror film, and that made it even better...Was it high brow entertainment?...No...Did it make me laugh and keep me entertained?...Yes...Also the tractor trailer scene wass worth the ticket price alone...Brian Keene

Dec 5, 1998

There's a blurb for ya: "It was the shit, yo!" ROFLMAO

Dec 10, 1998

Don't question my devotion to horror, Reanimated. That's the second time I had to tell you that. I'm not a movie person. I don't like going to theaters. I saw nothing wrong with the first PSYCHO, and I see no need to endorse this remake.

Dec 12, 1998

Geoff

If you dont like going to movie theaters that is your choise. I never once said you had to. Where did that little argument line come from? I personally thought you were done on the topic after you called me all those names up there. I guess not.

I am though.

Don't go to the movie Geoff. I didn't say that made someone a horror fan. Being excited for a horror movie coming out does.

You and everyone else out there is right. The ONLY reason the movie was remade was to make money. THAT'S IT. MONEY. Hey, maybe you're right. Maybe that is it. If it is true then i would like to come over to your side and fight agaist the establishment.

Otherwise, if there is just one other single reason for remaking that movie. ANYTHING! Love of the original? Desire to bring it to a new audience? Anything. Then I'M ALL FOR IT. I can see both sides, Geoff. I try to in most cases. I realize i'm mistaken quite a lot. But you know what? In the end its a fuckin movie. Just a fuckin movie called Psycho. Once the crazy Anne Rice religious freaks come out and start saying oh bo woo "why are they remakeing it" it just ruins the whole thing. You make it something more than it is, was and ever will be. It's a fuckin horror movie. They remade it. Big fucking deal. I'm a horror fan, and a horror movie fan. I want to see it. I did. I will again cuz i liked it. And if you were a fan you would rent it.

Reanimated

Please note that this message may seem harsher than it really is. It is the way i write messages. I swear a lot. Even when i'm happy. So please, dont think i'm holding a knife while i typed it. I'm just shootin the shit.

Dec 31, 1998

Hey Everybody!...Just a quick post concerning "THE FACULTY" which I saw last night...Not bad at all...Just as SCREAM was a homage to the slasher flicks, this one is a homage to BODY SNATCHERS, PUPPET MASTERS, and Carpenters remake of THE THING...Was it high brow, intellectual entertainment?...No...But it did keep me engrossed, the effects were great, there's a terrific cast of young actors who bring some substance to their roles (including a hilarious John Stewart), and the movie itself is just good old fashioned FUN!...Maybe wait for the rental, but certainly worth checking out sooner or later...Happy New Year all!...Brian Keene

Jan 5, 1999

Hi All

This has probably been talked to death in the archives, but I haven't got time to have a look at the moment. Just saw SCREAM 2 on video. I have to say it sucked big time. Did the background music in ordinary scenes get on anyone else's nerves? There were also some pretty major plot holes and the new character development was non-existent. I loved the first film, but the sequel didn't even come close. Anyone else have any views? Agree/disagree?

Kate

Jan 7, 1999

Kate

I agree with you about Scream 2. I liked it myself but didn't think it came anywhere near the original. Where i loved everything about the original i find i only enjoy certain parts of the sequel (like the opening kill in the movie thearter....and Sarah Michelle Geller's death scene). I thought the ending was a rip off because we had know way of knowing that the reporter was that kids mother. What i liked about the original is that you knew who everyone was and that was what was so facinating. Which of these people is the killer? Having it be the reporter/mother was a cop out. ( i was kinda hoping the sorority girls were behind it all with a type of devil worshipping thing thrown in...oh well).

I got the video of Black Christmas for Christmas!!! If you haven't seen this movie GO RENT IT! You wont be disappointed. It's just SOOOO creepy! (for a slasher movie)

Matt Taylor here....Just wanted to say that the son of a motherless goat that posted using my name up there is a load of spunk that should've been swallowed. Matt Taylor wants to say that he loves horror movies and just this last weekend watched HALLOWEEN H20 (And loved it) PHANTASM: OBLIVION (And tolerated it) THEY LIVE (Still loved it) and IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (And I still think it's incredible!).....And Matt Taylor is going to see THE FACULTY this weekend, and Matt Taylor is very excited about seeing IN DREAMS and is anxious to see how the RESIDENT EVIL movie is developed.

This fucking bullshit of using other people's names needs to stop.

Hey, Matt Taylor (the real one!), have you ever seen THE HIDDEN, which starred Kyle McLachlan I think. There was an inferior sequel, but the original was pretty good. I've been after the video for ages but can't seem to find it. Have you seen it, or do you know whether it's been deleted? Thanks.

P.S. Keene here again...I've got a confession to make to all of you...When I first came to this board, I wasn't sure which views would get me skewered so I would sometimes use the nom de plume of Peter S. (after Peter Steele of Type O Negative)...I have occasionally used this name since. Imagine my surprise to see the aboe comment, where somebody ELSE is also using the Peter S. monicker...Just as John Pelan did last week, so shall I...I officially retire the name Peter S. and leave it to the little cretins who enjoy posting under other peoples names...There, I feel better now...Brian Keene

Hi! Just wanted to tell you all that we've gone all the way... In our little Swedish town Sala we've got a horror- movie- association with weekly gatherings that includes home- baked cookies and a couple of good horror- videos. The host for the evening gets the privilege of finding out some interesting details on the movie, the director, the leading actors und so weiter and share them with us before watching. This summer we'll start filming our first home- made horror- movie. We've also got plans of renting the local cinema for a non- stop- horror- movie- festival to let people get some real culture in this god- forsaken country. There, I'm done braggin'... just wanted you to know what you REALLY could achive instead of just staying at home watching videos... he he! But seriously (no, not the Phil Collins' version...) since our town is small and primitive we're always looking for some good advice on films, new titles, where to buy them and so on... if you know anything, please let us know. If you don't... well a year from now I guess we'll be sitting on our gatherings saying: "Okey, should we watch "Zombie Flesheaters" for the 14th time or "Howling 5" for the 26th...? Save our souls! Hey, reanimated. I've seen ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, and GATES OF HELL, by FULCI. I haven't seen THE BEYOND. Everyone says it's his best. In what way? The story, the effects? I'd like to hear your opinion on this movie. Thanks, Bob

Mar 13, 1999

Hey Bob

To be honest i'm not that big on Italian horror. Which isn't to say i wouldn't like to be, but i don't know nearly as much about it as i would American horror. Anyway, i have seen ZOMBIE. I bought it just recently and thought it was great. If you like "dead" movies you'll like this. There are some great scenes in it that go for the "gross-out".

I've also seen DEMONS which i LOVED. This is an amazing movie. I rented it again about a year ago to watch with my wife (she liked it too) and i still thought it great. It's too bad there haven't been any "demon" types of films in so long (unless i'm forgetting something).

To make a long story short, if i can, i haven't seen THE BEYOND. I should. I should be ashamed of myself for not doing so yet. But i'm sure you will love it. GATES OF HELL is another film i've wanted to see. Well, i graduate in two months. Then i'll have all the time in the world to catch up on these great horror movies!!!!

Reanimated

Mar 13, 1999

I knew i was forgetting something. It was to do with demon movies not being done in some time. NIGHT OF THE DEMONS and NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 2 are low budget streight-to-video but i liked the them a lot. The original is a cult classic of sorts. The third installment that came out last year was shit. Total crap. I like dog house horror but that was some BAD film making.

I just bought a movie called Tokyo the Last Megalopolis, which was supposed to be horror, with creatures by Giger. I haven't finished watching it yet, but so far the evil guy looks like M.Bison from the Streetfighter video games and the "creatures" looked like something out of Clash of the Titans. The best part so far was when this girl vomited up some semen-looking stuff and a huge maggoty-thing came out of her mouth. I hope the end is that good! medianoche

Yesturday I saw FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 2: TEXAS BLOOD MONEY. I was very very impressed. For a streight to video movie i got my three bucks worth! It's action packed and even managed to get in a couple of honest to goodness creepy scenes (i have a lower threshold than most probably, so effects may vary). I was even pleasantly surprised to see Bruce Campbell in a small role. Probably my only complaint about this movie was that it didn't utilize Campbell better. Oh well. The F/X and make-up were great. As i've said before KNB can't be beat. The camera work was great too, with lots of funny angles and tricks. Looking forward to FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 3: HANGMAN'S DAUGHTER Did i get the title right?. Anyone have any idea when this film hits the video stores?

Also of note. BRIDE OF CHUCKY is now on video. I've pushed this movie all along and i want to one more time. If you haven't seen it yet GO RENT IT. I almost guaranty you will be surpised at how good it really is!

Reanimated: When did Texas Blood Money get released on video? I can't find it in ANY of the video stores around here, of course I live in the middle of nowhere...The only thing I've been able to find out about The Hangman's Daughter is that it'll be released later this year. I promise to rent Bride of Chucky this weekend...medianoche

I live in Toronto, Canada. That might be why it's easier to come by...more stores etc..The release date here was Tuesday March 23. I had to call a couple of stores before i found one that had it. Video 99...similar to Blockbuster. They had tons of copies so you shouldn't have to wait long. If the big chains are carrying it the little guys usually do also. But honestly i know dick about that stuff. I hope you get a chance to see it though. Tell me what you think of BRIDE!

Reanimated, I also plan to rent Bride of Chucky & From Dawn to Dusk 2 next week. ( I work a four day schedule at CNN and am off Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday) However I saw a preview screening of The Matrix last night (thursday). While not primarily a horror film but a Science Fiction/action movie I thought it "kicked my ass" as I said to a friend as we left the movie. My wife did not go and she would not have liked it but I highly suggest you see it. However, you should not read too much about it since it is a film where the reviews could give away much of the suprises of the plot. I went in only having seen the trailer. James

Reanimated--I just bought BRIDE OF CHUCKY on DVD. I love this movie. Great fun. BTW, in the interview portion of the DVD, the writer, DOn Macini (sp?) said that he structured the story of the movie like a slapstick romantic comedy with the humor coming from misunderstandings and such, which after thinking about it, that's exactly what it was like, but with corpses. A fresh take on old material, that really works. tom McAlister

Mar 27, 1999

reanimated, have you seen Carpenters THE THING? And what did you think of it. I personally think the effects have yet to be beat. It's, in my opinion, one of the most underrated movies of the Millenium! It is one of my favourite movies. I will be renting BRIDE this weekend, so I'll let ya know what I think. Also, I finally got Lucio Fulcis THE BEYOND. Will let you know if it's his best.Bob. sonofbill@centuryinter.net

Mar 27, 1999

Reanimated: I rented Bride of Chucky last night, laughed my ass off. It was a great movie! I loved seeing John Ritter and his, uh, unfortunate demise. Unfortunately I fell asleep & missed the end, but that's a bad habit of mine. For tonight I have Strangeland and Texas Blood Money (it finally arrived!). I'll let you know what I think. Have you seen Wes Craven's Carnival of Souls? It looked kind of good, so that's what we're renting next weekend. medianoche

Mar 28, 1999

Lot's of Chucky fans! I love it. medianoch you gotta see the end! It's a hilarious. About THE THING, it's one of my favorite movies. It's in a unique class of my all time fav's with JAWS and ALIEN and a few others. I love Carpenter, and as a amature collecter of horror posters i'm proud to say i've got most of his more genre oriented movie posters. (Fog, Thing, ITMOMadness, Village of the Damned, Vampires, etc..still looking for a reasonably priced HALLOWEEN poster.) Another of my favs from him is BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Curt Russell (sp?), i don't think as ever toped that performance. (my favorite scene with him though is in The THING when he says... "you gotta be FUCKIN KIDDING ME!"...great shit).

Have you guys seen the trailers for THE MUMMY? Man, that looks like it's gonna be AWSOME!.

Reanimated, I'll have to rent it again. I love the movie The Thing, have it on tape. I agree that it's one of the best movies of all time. Texas Blood Money was great! Unfortunately I missed the end of that one, too. Strangeland was pretty good, too. That guy from Twisted Sister has got to be one of the ugliest bad guys! medianoche

Hello folks,
I've got the original posters for both HALLOWEEN and HELLRAISER. Trouble is, they're both in Spanish, but they still look cool. I'm after the original posters for THE HIDDEN and CARRIE.

Sounds like you have quite a collection man! What other cool horror posters do you have? I am almost positive the place where i shop has both those posters you are looking for (THE HIDDEN and CARRIE) as originals.

Check out THE MOVIE POSTER WAREHOUSE. www.movieposter.com

If you don't see the posters you are looking for in the listings give them a call. They have lots of stuff in stock that isn't listed.

The tractor trailer scene in BRIDE OF CHUCKY was worth the price alone. Great Movie! I hear that SEED OF CHUCKY is now being planned, with a release date of sometime next year. Also want to cast my vote for THE THING. I'm still waiting for a horror movie to top that. Have any of you read the Dark Horse Comics sequal to it?....Brian Keene

Mar 31, 1999

Ok - I agree that "The Thing" is near the top of the list, but more in the "OH Shit - would you look at that" kind of way, rather than in any major scares. For completely scaring the crap out of me on a first viewing, the prize goes to "Alien", closely followed by "The Evil Dead" which I first watched all alone in a country cottage. (Stupid I know, but fun in a warped kinda way)

Reanimated: I haven't got too many movie posters, but I have a few 'common' ones like JAWS, EVIL SPEAK, PHANTASM and ROBOT JOX (anyone remember that pile of pants?!!). I've a few of what I would call rareties, i.e. CHOPPING MALL, CANNIBAL FEROX and TITAN FIND. The most I've paid is £50 for an 'almost-perfect' POLTERGEIST poster! I'll certainly check out the movie poster site. Ta!

I think that what happened with THE THING was the fact that the effects overshadowed the great writing, superb acting, and John Carpenters tight direction. It also came out around the same time as ET, so people were put off by nasty, ugly aliens. Maybe it didn't have the scare factor as ALIEN(another of my all time favs), but it's still one of the best movies. Some of my other favs are THE EVIL DEAD, 1 and 2, FROM BEYOND, REANIMATOR, THE VANISHING( the dutch version, not that american cop out), THE KINGDOM( I think it's another dutch movie), NIGHT, DAWN, DAY OF THE DEAD, NEKROMANTIC, SEVEN, ROBOCOP, HELLRAISER, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE EXORCIST( which reminds me, Reanimated, do you have that on DVD, and if you do, how good was the documentary?), THE HAUNTING,jesus, I could go on, and on(but, I won't). I also got to finally see THE BEYOND. This was FULCI at his best. A gore lovers delight. Y'know that man might not write the most compelling of stories, but he sure can set up an intense scene. Witness the splinter in the eye scene in ZOMBIE, or the scene where the child has his face held against a door as his father trys to break it open with an axe. Or a scene where someone is in a coffin, and someone uses a pickaxe to open it! THE BEYOND is recommended. Zombies, throat slashings, flesh eating tarantulas, this one has it all. Haven't been able to find BRIDE yet. But, I'm patient. All the best, Bob, sonofbill@centuryinter.net

Mar 31, 1999

Bob, You mentioned the documentary at the beginning of The Exorcist on DVD. Would that be the same one as the wide screen limited etc. on VHS? I just bought it (but haven't watched it yet). It sounds like I'll have to add The Beyond to my list of movies to watch! medianoche

Apr 1, 1999

The docu of THE EXORCIST on DVD is 75 minutes long. I think it is longer than the one on the VHS widescreen but I could be wrong. And it is very well done. Really got some interesting info out of it. I haven't watched the audio track with Friedkin and Blatty yet, but I bet that's interesting too. tom McAlister

Apr 1, 1999

Yeah, I've got THE EXORCIST documentary on VHS, but it's only 65 minutes long (could have been edited down).
Btw, I have to disagree with Bob regarding NEKROMANTIC. Again, I might have a different version, but I found it bordering on tedium and too dark for its own good. Only an opinion, though. DRILLER KILLER is another film I waited ages to watch only to be sorely disappointed. The uncut version of MANIAC was better (and it's got a cracking poster too!).

Apr 1, 1999

I first attempted to watch THE THING when i was pretty young. I was at a friends house and we had to watch it from the hallway. I tried to watch it a little while after and still it scared me too much. (i wasn't very smart see. i would rent the movies and then wait till after dark to watch them...) I finally watched it in fruition when i was thirteen or something. (in the afternoon) And still today i get frightened watching some of the scenes...(like all the scenes in the dog pen...FUCKIN SCARY!!...when the guy is alone with the dogs...when Russell checks on them....and then when the monster gets them...all those scenes are really scary....to me)

I also loved how The Thing ended. I was thinking about this because of all the talk about how The Midnight Tour ended, on the laymon board. What ever happened to MacGrady? I mean, it's a really realistic ending in that...hey, you got the monster BUT now you're stuck here. And the guy you're stuck with mightn't or might be the monster too!! It's one of the wickedest endings.

Apr 1, 1999

Brian, I noticed you mentioned that Dark Horse Comics did a sequel to The Thing. What's it called? medianoche

Apr 2, 1999

reanimated, I love the ending of THE THING. It gives you the chance to think up your own ending. I had heard rumours that someone was going to direct a sequel to it. It was to be ROB BOTTIN, probably one of the greatest effects artists ever(witness his work on ROBOCOP, and SEVEN, and, of course, THE THING). I think he's directing JASON Vs FREDDY. Can't wait for that one! Anyway, I'm the kind of person who likes the darker endings. NEAR DARK would be up there on my list if it didn't have that cop out ending. THE VANISHING has one of the best endings. Truly disturbing. As for the disagreement with NEKROMANTIC, well I love this movie because it's a very funny movie, in a very sick kind of way. I mean, his wife runs off with a corpse because the sex is better! Which reminds me, I'd better keep my wife away from funeral homes. The ending of NEKRO was so outlandish, it was hilarious. No, it's not a horror movie. It doesn't set out to scare you, just sicken you. Anyway, I STILL haven't gotten to see BRIDE! Other bastards rent it before I get there, and my video club doesn't hold movies over for you. medianoche, Dark Horse published THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD. You should see the cover of number one. It is awesome! That's partly the reason I bought it. It's not a bad comic, but, as with most things, it could've been better, but, it's worth looking out for.Speaking of THE THING, can anyone tell me what happened to John Carpenter, and Tobe Hooper, and Wes Craven? They were excellent directors, and then they went to shit. I watched THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE recently, and I asked myself "did Tobe Hooper really direct this, the same man who directed INVADERS FROM MARS, and LIFEFORCE?" Somehow, they lost something along the way. Carpenters VAMPIRES was an okay flick. It seemed muted somewhat. Like he was just going through the motions. Anyway, I gotta go. Got to prove to the wife that dead isn't better!Heh, heh, heh. Oh, by the way, if you want to see a pic of the first issue of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, email me and I'll send you one. All the best, Bob, sonofbill@centiuryinter.net

Apr 2, 1999

Bob i loved NEAR DARK too. Has to be one of my favorite vampire movies. I also didn't like VAMPIRES either. I thought it was beautifully directed but dead story wise. I got sick of the long setting shots and the wrangler type music...basically the filler is what i'm talking about. There was too much filler. I breaks my heart to see VAMPIRES fresh on the video shelves and me just walking by without even a tinkle of interest in renting it. But, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS has to be up very high on my lists of the "bests of" for the nineties. It was such a cool flick. And i loved the end to that too. (I wont say anything case some haven't seen it...but it rocks!) Sam Neil is just terrific.

This might sound strange but...i think i saw a movie by the NEKROMANTIC director you're talking about. It was at a festival... now i could be wrong here but i'm pretty sure it was him. It was pretty disturbing. Maybe you know it if i tell you that in one scene the main character puts his penis on a table edge and hammers a nail through it. Now he does this, i believe, over and over for the rest of the movie. It was sick. I'm pretty sure this was by the same director you are talking about i just can't remember the name of it.

Apr 2, 1999

Bob, I don't know about John Carpenter & Tobe Hooper, but Wes Craven's problem seems to be that he's more interested in gaining teenagers' money rather than making quality films. I mean, how many more sequels are they going to add to Scream? The first one sucked and the second one was even worse. I haven't seen John Carpenter's Vampires yet & I probably won't unless it shows up on HBO. medianoche

Apr 2, 1999

medianoche, SCREAM. Yeah, now there's a joke. Media hyping it as a horror movie. Who are they kidding? Not me. Fucker was a suspense/thriller/mystery. Nuthin' more, nuthin' less. The only good scene in all of the two SCREAM movies was the opening of SCREAM itself! That was it. I seriously hope that John, Wes, and Tobe go back and watch their earlier movies and try to get back to what was lost. Who in your opinion(this is open to everybody) will be the next great horror director(Hell, are there any out there for that matter)? ARGENTO has even declined. They say when you're in your late 30's, as I am, you begin to reminisce. Well I'm thinking back to the glory days of horror. Romero, Argento, Hooper, Craven, Fulci,Raimi,et al. Movies seemed to be more fun to watch back then. I duuno, I'm getting fuckin' old. Ah, well, back to something else. Do any of you play any games on your computer? I like DIABLO, and FALLOUT 1&2, and SANITARIUM. This computer is the reason I'm so behind in my reading. Can't get off the fuckin' thing. And, does anyone read PREACHER,by, Garth Ennis? This is one helluva comic book. Got a bit stale last few issues, but Garth has a way of getting back on track. He also writes HITMAN, another great comic. Warren Ellis writes TRANSMETROPOLITAN, a fuckin' screamer. Life in the future in Ellis's mind is very, very interesting, and very, very fucked up. He's now writing the scripts for HELLBLAZER(Ennis had a run on this, too. Very Highly recommended). Check these comic books out. They're not for kiddies. One last thing. Why can't I put my thoughts into words? I want to write what I'm really thinking, but all I ever write is watered down. It very frusrtating. Does anyone else have this problem? There's so much I want to say about Horror in general, but I can never remember what I want to write as I'm writing. Only after I've written something, and posted it, does everything come back to me. Yep, you're right, I'm trying to save money on actually going to a psychotherapist. Ah, well, enogh is enough, huh This is my day off. If I can't find BRIDE, I'm gonna scream.

Apr 2, 1999

See, I'm getting old. Forgot to sign. DUH!Bob sonofbill@centuryinter.net One more thing. reanimated, I've only ever seen NEKRO 1&2(the sequel really fuckin' sucked the big one. Not recommended at all). Was the movie you watched called THE SUICIDE KING?

Apr 3, 1999

It is a time for rejoicing! I read that England has finally lifted it's ban on THE EXORCIST. After how many years? 13, 14? Something like that? What a great democracy England has. It's the same as over here in the states. You can't watch that because WE don't like it. It disturbs US. It sickens US. You should be more like US. Yeah? Fuck you. There's only one kind of censorship I agree with. Child pornograpy. Everything else goes. I should have the right to watch what I want, read what I want, listen to what I want. Fuck you for telling me different. of course you're never going to read this because you probably won't even go near a HORROR site. OHHHHH NOOOOOO, those people are sick, and twisted, and deviant. We're all going to Hell. Well let me tell you something Mr and Mrs Holier Than Thou, if you think that GOD is not going to make a distintion between me( whose only sin is cursing, farting out loud, and masturbation), and Hitler, one of the most evil men on the face on the earth, then you're dead wrong. GOD is not only GOOD, but SMART. HE's going to send me to the same place as Hitler because I watch HORROR, and listen to MARILYN MANSON,and read books by Lansdale, Ketchum, King, and now, piccirilli? HEY! REALITY CHECK! I don't rob from people, I don't rape, I don't kill, I don't gas six million innocent people because they're a different religion than I. You really honestly truly think that I am damned for all time because of my interests? I do not think so. I think GOD is way smarter. Sorry folks, venting of spleen over. Now, can someone tell me WHY it was banned in the first place. England is not a Catholic country. I was brought up Roman Catholic. Me ma had a fit when she saw that I was reading THE EXORCIST. That's because I was stupid enough to let me da read it after I was finished. He touted(shoulda kneecapped him). So, why was it banned? And are they showing any kung fu flicks on TV? There was a ban on those, too. Especially the showing of the use of Nunchuks. Seems Governments everywhere are concerned for us. We are too stupid to tell the difference between fantasy, and reality.Thank you for your concern. I have watched many a violent movie in my 37 years on this planet, and the last fight I got into was when I was 14. I am not a violent person. Never have been. I abhor REAL violence. And no matter how many sick, twisted, violent movies I watch, or how many disturbing books I read, I will never change. Same goes with everyone else. So, stay out of my life motherfucker, or I'll kill you. Heh, heh, heh. That was a joke.Geddit. No, you probably don't.... It is also a day to rejoice because I finally got to see BRIDE OF CHUCKY. I went to the video store and went straight to the rack. Some little old lady had the final copy in her hand. I won.(Memo to Mr and mrs Holier Than Thou, that was a joke, too). And, I highly recommend it. This was a cool movie. Lots of inside references(Jason, and Michaels masks),there was even a reference to TYSON. The gore was surprising. Loved that truck scene, you know the scene I'm talking about reanimated? That was AWESOME! And the end,oh what an ending. Ronnie Yu did a helluva fine directing job.And the CHUCKY, and TIFFANY dolls were fantastic! Thanks for the recommendation, reanimated. It was well worth the wait. On a sad note, I failed in my attempt in proving to my wife that dead isn't better. Ah, well, better luck next year. All the best, Bob. sonofbill@centuryinter.net

Apr 3, 1999

holy shit Bob!

I completely agree. I hate censorship too. I told you you would love CHUCKY! It's such a great film. I want to rent it but my wife wants me to wait and watch it with her. argh! Don Mancini is going to take the helm for SON OF CHUCKY later this year. I watched this old horror flick last night called PARASITE. hmmmmm...the effects were great (by Stan Winston)! (considering it was made in 1980). And the acting wasn't so bad either. The story line was pretty streight forward. As i was watching it though i got the impression i was viewing a "cut" version. It's a pretty old film so i doubt if anyone has any knowledge about that...just an observation. It was directed by Charles Band, the guy who runs FULL MOON that produces those cheep streight to video flicks.

I think i'm gonna rent IT'S ALIVE tonight. It's horror franchise i have yet to see. Killer babies??? should be great!

I was just thinking, i wonder why Stan Winston doesn't direct another film. As far as i know he only did PUMPKINHEAD, which was super duper! Oh well...

Apr 6, 1999

HELP! I just made love to my wife, and I can't stop her giggling!Ah, well, next time I'll just do it in the dark. Speaking of funny looking penises, I did see PARASITE many, many moons ago. I think that when it was released, it was originally in 3D.Could be wrong, though. I usually am. Y'know, I used to watch just about every horror movie that came out. Even if it was crappy, even if it looked crappy in the previews. I always went to the movie, or I rented it. Nowadays, though, I find myself becoming more, and more disheartened. Movies nowadays don't really excite me as they did in the old days. I've become more choosey when it comes to what I want to watch. Consider BRIDE OF CHUCKY. I had the feeling when I was watching it that the people involved in making the movie had a blast. I don't usually get that from most movies nowadays. It made the movie that more enjoyable.Ah, could be that I'm getting old, and cranky. Jesus, maybe I'm becoming my dad. Brrrrrr! A chill just went down my spine, then. I just don't feel as though anybody has a passion, or a sense of FUN when it comes to making a good horror movie. Seems like they're just going through the motions, and hoping that someone will offer them something better, more "legit." It's still incredulous to me that horror is still considered a low brow genre. Horror has produced, in my opinion, some of the greatest creators of our time. Horror can make you think, make you feel, give you a sense of wonder, and awe, make you uncomfortable, sometimes it can disgust you, or enrapture you, or degrade you. It can make you turn your eyes away from the screen, it can make you scream out loud. Hell, if the direction is good, it can even turn you on. Horror can manipulate all of your senses. Horror can be a hybrid. It can incorporate itself into many other genres. It IS a legitimate genre. And, no-one can tell me different. There is nothing more satisfying than watching a good horror movie, or reading a good horror novel. I have often wondered what makes a person go out to see a paricular movie. Is it the previews, the word of mouth, the poster, or the ad campaign? I went to see David Cronenberg's RABID just on seeing the poster(It showed the body of a young woman stuffed in a freezer), and I went to see PHANTASM because of the ad campaign(If This One Doesn't Scare You, You're Already Dead!). What makes you all go see a movie? I'd be interested to read your comments. On the recommendation front, I rented DARK CITY. It's a dark Scifi movie. It's wonderfully directed by Alex Proyas( I'm pretty damn certain I spelt his name wrong), he's the same man that directed THE CROW, one of my all time favourites. It's about a man who wakes up and finds a dead woman in his apartment. He doesn't know who he is. Things get strange after this. Kieffer Sutherland plays a doctor who tells the man that everything is not what it seems. That people, and the whole city, is controlled by THE STRANGERS(black garbed humanoids). They're trying to learn about man's soul, as their race is dying. Is the man feverishly imagining this, is he insane? Watch the movie and find out. Very dark, great effects work. 'til next time. Bob. sonofbill@centuryinter.net
