Devon was mortally wounded in 1634 while fighting a man in the woods. Duncan MacLeod witness his death and being so young did not know Devon was Immortal. He buried Devon and when Devon came back to life, MacLeod taught him about the Game and on being an Immortal. This greatly angered Devon because he did not want to flee the country. He wanted to stay and inherit his fortune. In his rage, Devon attacked MacLeod and before MacLeod could behead him, guards showed up and shot MacLeod. Devon couldn't not inherit his fortune because of this and in 1997 he tried to kill MacLeod again but failed.
