When I was a freshman in high school I read a collection of science fiction short stories which included "The Littlest Dragonboy" by Anne McCaffrey. I immediately fell in love with her worlds and with science fiction (and fantasy) in general. There are a lot of sites on the net where Ms. McCaffrey's fans gather.

Of all the heroines in all the books I have ever read, the most memorable and admirable has always been Lois McMaster Bujold's Cordelia. I fell big time for Aral in Shards of Honor, but Barrayar is the one book that I admired the most. Cordelia is a veritable lioness; don't get in her way, folks! One thing that really impresses me about Ms. Bujold is the way that her Vorkosigan series has been of consistantly high quality. The latest, Memory was just incredible.

When I read David Weber's first Harrington book, On Basilisk Station, it was at the insistance of a friend. I was reluctant because it was science fiction (I normally like fantasy) and it was written by a man (not that I have anything against men, but I love character driven fiction and not many men write that). Boy, was I surprised.
David Weber has since risen to be one of my half dozen favorite authors, and he is, perhaps, the writer I admire the most. He has the ability to instantly generate sympathy for his characters, sometimes to a gut-clenching degree (read Honor Among Enemies and you'll see what I mean). However, his knowledge of military history and tactics gives a very sharp, focused crispness to his books, which is something many "character" type books lack. Weber seems to appeal to men and women both equally, which is another unusual strength of his writing. His heroine Honor Harrington is a very strong character, though perhaps a bit too invulnerable in many ways. She's not a "man with breasts" but she comes dangerously close at times. In any case, I would recommend Weber's books very highly.

Michelle Sagara's Sundered quadrilogy suffered from terrible distribution and is very difficult to find anywhere. This is not light reading. It is the ultimate, distilled essence of the Beauty & the Beast story, the anti-hero reformed by love. So intense in places that I had to put the book down and take a short walk before I could continue.
When I first read Barbara Hambly's Dragonsbane, I was struck by what an unusual supporting hero she had created. Whimsical and down-to-earth at the same time, he was neither the stereotypical arrogant romantic lead, nor was he the oversensitive, self-doubting woman-without-breasts that you find in some stories. Antryg Windrose, from her Silicon Mage series is the same way. Vulnerable and gentle without being helpless or self doubting. Though her POV character is always a woman it is often the men in her stories which I remember best.

Amazon Books
This is by far the best on-line bookstore I've found. They are reasonably priced, prompt in shipping and their books arrive in excellent condition. If they are not able to ship all of your books out at once they send them in multiple shipments for no extra charge. Even old books that are no longer being published may be available. To find the books you've been looking for, try their
book search. The site has beautiful cover scans for most of their books, comments from people who have read the books and easy ways to find other books by that author.

Feminist Science Fiction, Fantasy & Utopia
A site for "feminist" science fiction. Normally I avoid stuff like this but the page author defines feminism as the belief that men and women are equal, and doesn't appear to have any militant or "rage" based overtones. Focuses on the idea that through science fiction, women can explore their true potential outside of traditional societal limitations.
